In Rhythm with the Sun

Heat, wood and challenges in Thailand

An evening update from Kai brings fresh impressions from Mae Sot. The third week on the construction site is characterized by hard work, intense heat and visible progress. While temperatures rise to 35 degrees, the sun is being put to optimum use: The clay bricks dry quickly and can be laid directly. Faulty or damaged bricks are simply re-stamped and reused - nothing is lost. The close cooperation with local workers, who are an indispensable part of the team, provides a valuable exchange. The first interior walls are being built in parallel with the clay block production, while the façade is taking shape. Work on the project follows the design-build principle: plans are adapted to the conditions directly on site and decisions are made flexibly. Window openings were defined and the wall infill discussed in a façade workshop. One highlight was the assembly of the timber construction: solid beams made from recycled teak were measured, drilled, bolted and positioned. In a short time, five beams were in place - the moment when the construction site became a real building! The timber construction floats above the walls, the load is transferred directly into the foundations via supports. The orientation and design of the roof structure allow optimal air circulation and, together with the cool clay walls, create a pleasant indoor climate even at high temperatures. The building is growing - and with it the anticipation of what is yet to come!
