Subtle Shades

Material and colour sampling on site at the Köln-Höhenberg Education Campus

How do different surfaces affect the feel of a space? How do colours change depending on the light? And how do different materials work together? These were the questions our colleagues explored during a visit to the construction site of the new Köln-Höhenberg Education Campus. Working directly within the building shell, they examined different materials and colour shades, comparing samples and fine-tuning how they work together. The interior design plays an important role in creating a welcoming atmosphere and helping people find their way around the school in everyday life. In the open learning environments in particular, colours and materials are intended to help define different areas and create a comfortable setting for learning. Sampling on site provides an opportunity to review design decisions in the actual spaces and under real lighting conditions.
