Hands-on in Thailand

School construction project for refugee children in Mae Sot

Great news from our team: our colleague Kai will be part of a very special project for six weeks at the beginning of 2025. He was selected from over 100 applicants to build a school for refugee children in Mae Sot, Thailand, together with eleven other young architects. In a region that is heavily burdened by the influx of refugees from Myanmar, the school construction project is more than just an architectural endeavour. It is a beacon of hope for children who need a place to learn and grow in an uncertain world. Every year, numerous families flee to Mae Sot to escape the conflicts in Myanmar - the number of pupils in the local schools is growing rapidly. This is precisely where the »Hands On« project of the Foundation of German Architects and the NRW Chamber of Architects comes in.

Under the direction of experienced architect Jan Glasmeier and his office »Simple Architecture«, a school building will be constructed in a very short space of time. Creative construction processes and local materials such as clay bricks will be used. For Kai, the project offers the opportunity to gain practical experience, familiarise himself with new construction methods and work interculturally. From mid-January, he will be reporting regularly from Mae Sot - on the progress, the challenges and the construction process on site. We look forward to exciting updates, pictures and insights!
