Our colleague Kai has been in Thailand for 1.5 weeks to build a school for refugee children together with other young architects as part of the Hands-On project of the Foundation of German Architects.
After exploring the architectural highlights of Bangkok in the first few days, the team travelled to Mae Sot, on the border with Myanmar. Here, an existing school is being extended by a new building with four classrooms in order to cope with the increasing number of pupils.
The first week on site has already been intense:
Clay brick production: Earth, rice husks and water were tamped with the feet, moulded into wooden formwork and dried in the sun.
Foundation work: Foundations were dug, steel tied and reinforcement cages woven into which the concrete will be poured in the next stage.
Woodwork: Timbers for formwork spacing and fixings have been prepared.
We are looking forward to the next steps!
