NEW BUILDING Residential Building Langenhorn

Comfortable and smart

From a purely architectural point of view, Langenhorn in Hamburg-Nord is a prime district of northern German architecture. Typical regional brick buildings meet modern residential complexes here, giving the district a pleasant mixture of rural idyll and urban flair. And another fact: Langenhorn was home to one of the most important architectural icons of interwar brick expressionism. Fritz Höger lived and worked in his private residence on Langenhorner Chaussee at the beginning of the 20th century.

All good things come in fives

»Comfortable living« was the construction task of the residential project with high demands on design, living quality and modernity. A total of 81 residential units in five residential buildings with 82 parking spaces were built on the 9,500 square metre site. These are connected to each other via an underground car park. In addition, 14 parking spaces offer the possibility to conveniently supply e-cars with electricity and charge them overnight. The above-ground connection is via the communal courtyard, which offers all residents a suitable retreat and creates space for children, picnickers or sun worshippers.

Particularly important in this project are the large-scale window areas, which give the facade its transparency and the interiors their generosity.

Urban living with a view

And speaking of sun: some of the staggered flats in the three-storey structures are blessed with a roof terrace. The remaining residential units all have cantilevered balconies and large floor-to-ceiling windows, making the flats bright and flooded with light. The stair cores are also designed to be maximally transparent with a mullion-transom facade that lends structure to the elongated building volumes through projections and recesses in the area of the building entrance doors. And another plus point on the subject of sunlight: thanks to the south-west orientation of the long facade, the structures are aligned in such a way that the incoming sun can be used with maximum efficiency and can even help to reduce heating energy requirements in winter.

Purely materially a pleasure

The white plaster flaps around the windows and individual white plastered cubes structure the facades of the five residential buildings and create a pleasant small-scale feel. Anthracite-coloured window and balcony elements, including an anthracite fascia, round off the high-quality overall package. And inside, the quality continues: real wood parquet flooring, underfloor heating, showers down to floor level and separate storage rooms within the flats, together with barrier-free access and video intercom systems in all residential units, ensure that no wishes remain unfulfilled. Just maybe one: more flats like these and enough living space for everyone.

Voices from the team

Whether large or small, whether condominiums, rental flats or subsidised housing - we have implemented the same design concept for all in order to create the same feeling of home for all residents.

A simple trick with a great effect: the alternation of clinker facade and white plaster surfaces gives the building a sculptural structure.
