Lively learning

New primary school in Velbert's old town

A place is currently being built in Velbert that will not only impart knowledge, but also encourage curiosity and fun in learning: the new Grünstrasse primary school. With a well thought-out concept that aims to create a lively and friendly environment for children, this new building will not just be a place of learning, but a true house of knowledge.

A central aspect of this design is the colour concept, which is based on warm, fresh magenta, yellow/orange and turquoise tones. These colours accompany the pupils on their exciting journey through the colourful House of Knowledge and strengthen their identification with the building. Here they not only find learning spaces, but also living spaces in which they can develop and grow. The new building not only includes the main building for a three-form primary school with clusters for different year groups, but also other functional areas such as administration, staff room, canteen and ancillary rooms as well as a sports hall.

The realisation of this project also poses particular challenges. In the middle of the historic town centre, surrounded by important architecture, the new Grünstrasse primary school faces the task of blending in harmoniously with its existing surroundings. In particular, the nearby Christuskirche church, built in the Art Nouveau style in 1908, poses a challenge. For example, the planning must ensure that building services installations on the roof and their enclosure do not obstruct the view of the church.
