Room for attitude

Sarah Schäper in dialogue with NDR Kultur

As part of the WIA25 Festival, our colleague Sarah spoke to NDR Kultur about the continuing lack of visibility of female architects. In the interview, Sarah emphasised how important it is to promote diversity in architecture: Although around half of architecture students today are women, only a few of them go on to run their own practice.

The world of construction was - and still is - very much in male hands. And the consequences of this are that there has only ever been one particular point of view. And accordingly, there has only ever been one way of formulating needs and responding to requirements.

Sarah

Sarah emphasised that it is only through different perspectives that truly liveable, safe and inclusive spaces can be created. The contribution emphasises how urgently festivals like the WIA25 are needed. They bring female architects into the spotlight, recognise their achievements and show how women are helping to shape our built environment.

For me, it's just so important to get away from stereotypes. To open up, to enter into dialogue, to exchange ideas, to listen to each other, to be able to accept other opinions. And together - and to have that as a principle! - together with a team, with other people, to start creative processes.

Sarah

We are proud of Sarah's commitment and are convinced that architecture becomes better when we work openly and in dialogue as a team and bring together different perspectives to design spaces that are truly there for everyone.
