Food for thought

Results of our »Open Lab«

»What kind of spaces do we need to make sure everyone feels like they belong, can grow, and reach their full potential?« That's how our colleague Sarah kicked off her talk at this year's WIA Festival. Together with moderator Christin Noack, an open dialogue ensued, which was greatly enriched by feedback from our guests. In the form of an »open lab« we collected the guests' thoughts and perspectives on participation cards. This gave us valuable insights into their perspectives:

The subsequent evaluation of all responses yielded three key findings:

1. Safety comes from light, orientation, and retreat
Many participants described feeling safe in bright, well-lit, and clearly laid-out rooms, especially when there are also small places to retreat to. Clear guidance systems, warm materials, and natural colors were also mentioned repeatedly. Safety therefore means not only control through visibility, but also spaces that allow for retreat and are designed with care.

2. Public infrastructure as the basis for fairness
Whether it's functioning elevators in local transport, clean and accessible toilets, or accessible drinking water points: the desire for reliable basic services in public spaces was expressed time and again. Small but effective measures—such as low curbs or seating for all—were emphasized just as much as structural improvements. The message is clear: everyday infrastructure is a decisive factor in participation.

3. Embrace diversity and shape things together
Alongside functional aspects, cultural and social needs were also mentioned. Places for meeting, exchange, and creativity; spaces without cars, offering room for nature and communal use instead. The call for participation was also striking—people don't just want to use spaces, they want to help shape them. The female perspective played an important role in this: the feeling of being safe when other women are present, or the demand for inclusive planning that excludes no one.

We are taking these ideas with us – into our projects, our academy, and our daily collaboration. And because many voices are important to us, we are extending the survey digitally so that we can continue to think and design together with even more committed people.
