Two under one roof

Project contract awarded for the extension of the Schenefeld school centre

With the contract award for the Achter de Weiden school centre, we are working with our partner GOLDBECK to rethink a learning environment that houses two schools under one roof – a comprehensive school and a grammar school. Built in the 1970s, the existing building will be given a new, identity-defining addition in the form of a four-storey modular extension, which will naturally blend in with the existing structure. The new extension will be the main address of the comprehensive school and will house all the rooms it needs, while the main entrance and most of the grammar school's rooms will be located elsewhere. The new face of the school centre will be created on the south side. An open welcome area leads into a spacious foyer, which serves as a common centre and connects specialist rooms and learning clusters. This is where the paths of both school types meet without losing their independence: self-sufficient clusters offer peace and orientation, promote individual development and at the same time create spaces for joint learning. The new building also builds bridges in terms of design: the familiar brick language of the existing building is reinterpreted and continued – an expression of the basic idea of »as much commonality as possible, as much separation as necessary«. We are very much looking forward to this wonderful project!
