A Hamburg Original

Commission awarded for the transformation of the School am Lämmermarkt

A piece of Hamburg’s architectural history is being given a new future. In the heart of St. Georg, the former Vocational School Lämmermarkt, designed around 1920 by Hamburg’s Chief Architect Fritz Schumacher, is to be transformed into a modern university campus. In future, students of Social Work and Childhood Education at HAW Hamburg will study and work here. We are delighted to have been awarded the commission to transform this historic school building, with careful consideration for its listed status. The project focuses on sensitively combining the building’s historic fabric with contemporary requirements for accessibility, inclusion and collaborative learning. In this way, a distinctive part of Hamburg’s architectural heritage will be preserved while becoming part of the future of the Berliner Tor university campus.
