We are delighted to have been awarded the contract for the extension and renovation of the Schmedenstedt/Woltorf primary school in the heart of a historic village centre in Lower Saxony. The »School under the Rainbow« stands for inclusive education that focuses on the child and enables them to develop skills relevant for the future. Special features such as the subject »happiness« show how much heart and vision is being put into rethinking education here.
The urban design concept for the primary school is deeply rooted in the village environment. It respects the existing tree population and sensitively integrates it into the open space planning. The existing building with its multi-purpose hall will be renovated and converted, with the hall being strengthened as a central meeting place for the village community. A three-storey new building complements the ensemble and, together with the existing building, creates the necessary space for the school association of Schmedenstedt and Woltorf, which currently teaches at two different locations. The façade design of the new buildings references the historic buildings of the village and emphasises the role of the school as the village centre.
Inside the school, all four grades are brought together to create a strong sense of identity. The new building houses a foyer with a canteen, auditorium and music room on the ground floor, which can be flexibly divided and serve as the representative face of the school. The learning environments for years 1–4 on the upper floors are designed as open learning centres that offer a wide range of opportunities for tailored learning and meet modern educational requirements.
