Construction work has begun in Cologne on a comprehensive expansion of the Johann-Gottfried-Herder-Gymnasium. At the heart of the project are two sports halls, one above the other – the lower one a two-court hall sunk almost five meters into the ground. The unexpectedly high groundwater level made it necessary to redesign the plans exceptionally quickly. Now that the building permit has been granted, the new construction can finally be realized. It will be complemented by a new classroom wing with additional teaching rooms, which will be connected directly to the existing building via a bridge. The compact design will create valuable new space for sports and learning, which will strengthen and enrich the location in the long term.
