EXPANSION Sports hall in Cologne Mülheim
Sport in vertical format
With the new expansion for the Johann-Gottfried-Herder-Secondary school, the city of Cologne is meeting the growing demand for school and sports facilities. The new building cleverly integrates two stacked sports halls and a classroom wing with four classrooms and a toilet facility for breaks. With its sophisticated architecture, the building blends harmoniously into the existing campus grounds and at the same time creates new, high-quality spatial qualities.

Bright entrance with a view
The spacious entrance area on the first floor is characterized by a two-storey, light-flooded foyer that creates transparency and a prestigious arrival. The janitor's lodge, a meeting room and barrier-free changing rooms and WC facilities are located here. A central staircase and an elevator ensure barrier-free access to all floors. Interior windows create targeted views: The main staircase opens up views of the schoolyard and the sports halls in the basement and at the same time functionally connects all areas with each other.
A bridge to new learning worlds
The classrooms on the second floor are designed as a modern cluster, with a cluster forum in the center offering a wide range of uses. Equipped with seating steps, benches and lockers, the forum offers space for group work, differentiation and individual learning. The connection to the existing building is made by a bridge, which rounds off the open and light-flooded room design. Skylights provide a bright atmosphere and large windows allow for flexible and clear room organization.

Cubature with character
The design concept of the new building reinterprets the existing architecture and creates a clear link between old and new - both in the choice of materials and in the color scheme. The base of the building is designed with a light red clinker brick, on which the upper floors rest in a light beige metal façade.
The differentiated cubature, large-format windows and the alternation between smooth and perforated façade elements create a dynamic appearance.

Designed for climate and comfort
The building meets the high standards of energy efficiency level 40. Heat is supplied by a combination of air-to-water heat pumps and an existing gas boiler to cover peak loads. Underfloor heating ensures even heat distribution. Mechanical supply and exhaust air systems with heat recovery ensure a pleasant indoor climate, supplemented by windows that can also be operated by motor in the sports halls and allow fresh air to enter. A photovoltaic system on the extensively greened roof generates around 145,000 kWh per year, while energy-efficient LED lights provide the interior lighting.
