NEW BUILDING Secondary school Herderschule
A centre that connects
In the centre of the Herderschule school campus in Rendsburg, a new building is being constructed that combines modern learning with architectural respect for the surroundings. The new building replaces an outdated structure from the 1950s and fits seamlessly into the ensemble of assembly hall and classroom wing. The proximity to the city lake, park and listed buildings makes the location particularly attractive.

Ensemble with accents
The new building combines history and modernity in a clear, cubic design language. The façade picks up on the materials and colours of the existing buildings: Red clinker brick dominates the appearance, while blue façade panels set accents and emphasise striking areas such as the main entrance or the teachers' room. These elements not only create links to the existing buildings, but also give the new building an independent identity. The transition between the buildings is created by a single-storey foyer with a main entrance that welcomes visitors and forms the new centrepiece of the campus.

Short distances clear structures
Inside, the new building impresses with its clear structure and well thought-out room layouts. The ground floor houses the spacious learning environments, while the administration rooms are located on the two upper floors. A clear support grid enables a flexible floor plan design and customisation of the room sizes in the various functional areas. Sanitary facilities in the centre and surrounding circulation areas with common areas provide orientation and create short distances. The colour theme of the façade is continued: the combination of red and blue tones runs through the building and gives the interior spaces a harmonious connection to the exterior.

The building is planned to meet the KfW 40-EE standard, uses durable materials such as brick façades and integrates extensive green roofs with a photovoltaic system. Special challenges, such as taking into account the existing pile foundation, were mastered through precise planning. The realisation during ongoing operations also required close coordination between all parties involved in order to ensure a smooth transition for the students during the construction period.
