Last Sunday, to mark Day of Architecture, we took children aged 7 to 12 on an exciting discovery tour of the »Neue Mitte Altona« neighbourhood. Under this year's theme of »Building Diversity«, we explored how architecture and urban planning cater to the different needs of the people who live and move around here.
We focussed in particular on details such as entrances and exits, floor coverings and the design of public spaces, which are essential for low-barrier and inclusive use. We also looked at the diverse possibilities of architectural design through materials, shapes and colours that give the neighbourhood its unique character. The young participants carefully recorded their impressions in notes and sketches.
We then creatively realised our observations in the office: The children folded imaginative shapes and small works of art out of simple paper. Unique objects were created, sometimes in teamwork, which expressed the diversity of space in a playful way.
An inspiring day that shows that diversity begins with a closer look - and can be shaped with creativity and curiosity.
Many thanks to Ligalux for the loans and to the team of the Day of Architecture at the Hamburg Chamber of Architects for the organisation and coordination.
