Conversion during ongoing school operation

The school building of the Waldeck-Frankenberg district vocational school, built around 1977, no longer met today's requirements. Defective windows and exterior doors, fire protection deficiencies and energy deficits made a comprehensive refurbishment necessary. In addition, pollutants had to be removed and the room structures adapted to educational requirements. As the refurbishment took place while the school was still in operation and only parts of the school could be relocated, the six construction phases were adapted to the school's operations.

Renovating the school while it was still in operation was a particular challenge. It was like a jigsaw puzzle where every piece had to fit perfectly so as not to disrupt the school day.

The refurbishment not only included the renovation of the façade, the flat roofs and the shed roofs above the workshops, but also a complete modernization of the technical infrastructure. With a new ventilation system, modern skylight domes and an adapted electrical installation, the building with a usable area of approx. 9,350 m² meets the current requirements of the vocational school. The prefabricated two-storey façade made of timber panel construction elements and the use of different materials such as large zinc rhomboids and Trespa panels ensure a friendly and modern appearance. The energy-efficient refurbishment and the sustainable, high-quality choice of materials contribute to the longevity and efficiency of the school building.

The new spatial concept promotes community and exchange. The implementation of a new routing, in which streets lead to the individual buildings with learning worlds as well as to interior courtyards, creates an inviting and cooperative learning environment. The three inner courtyards, which are reminiscent of market squares, offer a high quality of stay. Exposed, circumferential visual connections bring a lot of light into the existing spatial structure and the interior space expands outwards. In line with the pedagogical concept, the open and transparent learning environments have been designed without doors. A clever arrangement of the room elements solves the issue of acoustics.

It was important to us to create a school that is not only modern and functional, but also a place where pupils and teachers feel comfortable and enjoy spending time.

Voices from the team

The high level of prefabrication of the building elements meant that the construction time could be considerably reduced and at the same time a high quality of execution ensured.
