NEW BUILDING Erich Kästner School Rellingen

For people of all ages

A new school campus is being built in Rellingen for about 200 children, which will offer space for social interaction far beyond the classroom. With a public library, a three-court sports hall, and spacious outdoor facilities, the goal is to create a vibrant community hub for the entire neighborhood.

Beyond the school grounds

Where warehouses for an online retailer were originally planned, a new place for learning, activity and community is now taking shape on Hermann-Löns-Weg. Following objections from local residents, the urban development concept was revised, paving the way for the new primary school. On a site of approximately 19,200 m², a three-storey school building and a sports hall form a cohesive ensemble. Between the two buildings, sheltered playgrounds and publicly accessible open spaces provide room for play, physical activity and social interaction.

Site map

The three-storey façade is characterised by a clear horizontal structure, emphasised by continuous bands at each floor level. Light-coloured brickwork provides a calm backdrop to the generous window openings. Pale green panels above the windows introduce subtle accents of colour, reinforcing the building's contemporary, understated architectural language.

Inside the school, two learning clusters will connect classrooms with spaces for individual and collaborative learning. The facilities will also include specialist classrooms, a dining hall, an assembly hall and spaces for all-day education and care.

A particular feature is the planned branch of the municipal library on the ground floor, which will also be open to the wider community. Together with the three-court sports hall and its spectator seating, it will extend the facilities available to the neighbourhood, making the school a place to meet beyond school hours. Green roofs, photovoltaic panels and the planned use of waste heat from a neighbouring data centre form part of the sustainable energy concept.

The design and general planning for HOAI Service Phases 1–4 were undertaken by Hamburg-based BKSA Architekten. Completion is scheduled for late 2027 or early 2028.
