NEW BUILDING OGGS Harksheide-Nord

Grown in the heart

With the sustainable extension, the Harksheide-Nord open all-day primary school in Hamburg-Norderstedt has been given a healthy, warm, and natural center that not only complements the functionality but also creates a clear centerpiece for the spacious school complex. Here, the cafeteria, all-day area, and administration are compact, bright, and close to nature, all under one roof.

Naturally connected

The open all-day primary school Harksheide-Nord is nestled in the green north of Hamburg. The new rooms for the all-day school were not only created for functional reasons, but also as added value – a place that blends in carefully and at the same time opens up new qualities. The new building, constructed using sustainable timber, echoes the façade style of the existing buildings with its reddish clinker base, while the brightly clad upper floor with its rounded corners seems to float slightly above the base, gently transitioning the volume into the green surroundings.

Meeting place under trees

Inside, the building surprises with its unique spaciousness: high ceilings, plenty of natural light, and a design that references the rich tree population on the grounds. On the ground floor, a bright foyer serves as the central arrival and distribution point between the cafeteria, after-school care center, and adjacent classrooms. Natural materials and warm colors create a friendly atmosphere and give even the youngest students a feeling of security. The upper floor houses the rooms for the all-day program and administration—clearly structured and functionally connected.

More space for community

The cafeteria, kitchen, and multipurpose rooms are arranged in such a way that they are open not only to the school but also to external users, with their own access and locking system. This creates a place that functions beyond the school day and enriches the community. The location of the new building also ensures short distances and seamlessly integrates all-day care into the daily routine.

Hybrid with attitude

The combination of a solid base structure on the ground floor and prefabricated wooden modules on the upper floor combines durability with a fast and gentle construction method. Thanks to modular prefabrication, the construction time was significantly reduced - to the benefit of ongoing school operations. External sun protection and covered entrance areas ensure a pleasant indoor climate, while barrier-free access enables inclusive use.

Voices from the team

The challenge was to carefully integrate the new building into the existing ensemble. The result is a new center that provides space for encounters, orientation, and community.

Max

By combining a solid ground floor with a lightweight upper floor using modular timber construction, we were able to build quickly and conserve resources.
