EXPANSION Vocational college Bergheim
Kentener Canon
With the second construction phase at Kentener Wiesen, the Bergheim vocational college will be consolidated into a single location. A complementary new building is being constructed on the site of the first construction phase, which was completed in 2019, and will house the training courses currently still located on Kettelerstraße. For the students, this will not only create a modern educational building, but also a shared campus that brings together the existing and new buildings as »one school.«

The new building not only blends harmoniously into the existing structure, but also clearly conveys the sense of »we«: two buildings, one school. The four-story building is based on the first construction phase in terms of volume, height, and materials, adopting its recesses, façade grid, and light-colored clinker brick façade. A glass joint between the new building and the existing structure creates views and access points.
We're not just investing in a building, but in the future of young people – while also strengthening the Kentener Wiesen school location as a central educational campus for future generations.

To the beat of the day
On the ground floor, users enter the open heart of the new building: the auditorium with a stage, dining area, and adjoining teaching kitchen becomes the communicative center of the school. Thanks to generous glazing, high amenity value, and flexible usage options, it serves as an event venue, learning space, and meeting place all at once. The administration, the teachers' room, and the secretariat are connected to the auditorium and are therefore easily accessible to everyone.

Topography of learning
Inside, open and flexible room configurations create versatile learning and meeting places that are tailored to the individual needs of users. Spacious work areas, mini-auditoriums, quiet rooms, and transparent team stations support both individual and collaborative learning. The third floor houses the health, nutrition, and catering departments with their own practice rooms and teaching kitchens – this is where students learn, cook, and experiment.
The color and material concept from the first construction phase has been continued to create a uniform appearance: wood accents meet shades of white and green, visual connections meet places of retreat, open spaces meet clear zoning – reflecting modern everyday school life.
