NEW BUILDING Bille-Grammar school
Angle with vision
On a previously unused site in Billwerder Straße in Hamburg's Lohbrügge district, new life is coming to life with the establishment of the Bille-Grammar School. As the sixth grammar school in the Bergedorf district, it will enrich the educational landscape and offer modern teaching for around 750 pupils. An ensemble of three new buildings is being created on the site at three different angles: the individual building, the classroom building and a 2-court sports hall. The new learning landscape opens up an educational space that brings openness, community and modern pedagogy to life.

New foundation with vision
The new 3.5-grade secondary school follows a clear mission: to create an environment conducive to learning that meets modern educational requirements and at the same time is firmly anchored in the neighborhood. The positioning of the buildings is based on a previous feasibility study that makes optimum use of the site's conditions. The narrow access situation on Billwerder Street is solved with an open and inviting welcome square that leads visitors into the urban courtyard and to the center of the school, the multifunctional hall in the individual building. The outdoor space concept is complemented by a green movement area and green classrooms that extend learning into the open air.

Three buildings one campus
The secondary school is divided into three central buildings, which together form the new educational campus. The individual building houses the administration, the specialist classrooms and the learning environments for the younger year groups, as well as the canteen with multifunctional hall. The open hall is the heart of the school and can be used as a meeting place for various events. The Hamburger Klassenhaus is based on the already established building type and offers space for the higher grades, a vocational orientation center, the team area for teachers and a self-study center. Finally, the sports hall will be built, consisting of two single-field halls with separate entrances and a boulder wall on the façade, which will continue the play and movement outside.

Growing securely learning freely
The planning of the secondary school and in particular the learning environments takes into account the specific requirements of the location and the needs of future users: While the structure of the rooms for the younger grades tends to remain closed and offer protective space, it opens up for the higher grades to encourage independent work. One highlight is the study booths with large seating windows, which offer places of retreat and can be used for individual or group work, which in turn promotes communication with each other.

Naturally efficient
All buildings are given a fine, light-colored clinker brick façade, which is accentuated by profiling in some areas. In the sports hall, the upper façade area is additionally structured with a wooden curtain wall. The flat roofs are used as green roofs with photovoltaic systems. Wood-aluminium windows and natural ventilation with night cooling elements optimize energy efficiency. In addition, the building design was accompanied by a life cycle assessment (LCA). This enabled well-founded, environmentally-oriented decisions to be made over the entire life cycle and ensured that the defined limits of the LCA were adhered to.

Step-by-step realization
To ensure that the construction work runs smoothly, the project was divided into clear construction phases. The first work began on site in March 2025, with the classroom-house being built first, followed by the individual building and finally the sports hall.
