NEW BUILDING Primary school Mühlenberg
Concept diversity
The Mühlenberg district in the south of Hanover is being given a central educational and community center with the replacement building for the primary school. The design takes up the cultural diversity of the district and creates an intercultural marketplace as a meeting place. This new meeting place strengthens the existing qualities of the surrounding area and creates a protected yet open space that symbolizes the intercultural and inclusive orientation of the school.

Naturally integrated
The new primary school is harmoniously integrated into the surrounding buildings and, with its two-storey structure, blends in with the neighboring terraced houses and residential buildings. Projections and recesses create a three-sided neighborhood square facing Leuschnerstraße, while a sheltered courtyard to the west serves as a retreat for the pupils. The trees, including an identity-forming plane tree, will be retained and supplemented by green islands.

A building explains itself
The new building is functionally divided into two construction phases: First, the primary school with forum, foyer, canteen and assembly hall was built in the northern section, followed by the sports hall and family center in the south. The arrangement of the functions creates a gradation from public to semi-public and private areas. The different parts of the building are connected by a central access corridor, which acts as a backbone and connecting element. The façades of the new building are made of beige clinker brick, which makes the different areas of use visible through different color accents and supports the identification of the users with the building.

Centerpiece for school and district
The primary school is divided into six learning environments, which are each designed as clusters with diverse spatial qualities. These learning environments offer space for concentrated work, group work and individual support. Transparent design elements such as glass panels and skylights create a bright, open atmosphere and promote communication and a sense of community. The two-storey forum forms the central element of the new building and links the primary school with the neighborhood square and the schoolyard. Large glazed areas and flexible partition walls allow the space to be used for a variety of events and activities. The assembly hall and canteen, which open onto the forecourt, reinforce the connection between the school and the district.

Openness that connects
Located in the southern part of the new building, the daycare center scores with its ground-level location and direct connection to the foyer with a high degree of flexibility. The multi-purpose room and administration area are strategically positioned to ensure efficiency and safety. Clearly separated areas for the day nursery and kindergarden each offer their own play and eating zones, which create an open, communicative atmosphere thanks to glass panels and transparency. The two planned single-field sports halls are available to both pupils and district clubs. The direct connection to the primary school and the self-sufficient usage options ensure flexible and versatile use.
