NEW BUILDING Schenefeld School Complex

Two under one roof

In Schenefeld, the existing »Achter de Weiden« school complex – which houses both a comprehensive school and a grammar school under one roof – is expanding. The four-story new building adds a new, identity-defining element to the existing structure from the 1970s and will become the main location of the comprehensive school.

Arriving together

The new building is not intended to exist as a stand-alone structure, but rather as a natural expansion of the existing buildings. Facing south, it forms the new face of the community school with a spacious welcome plaza. Stairs, ramps, and seating steps combine the various pathways, creating a welcoming space for those arriving from both the school campus and the center of Schenefeld.

As much togetherness as possible, as much separation as necessary.

Where all paths cross

Behind the entrance lies a spacious foyer. It serves as a gathering place, an event space, and the connecting heart of the new building. From here, pathways branch out to the various departments and learning environments. Visual connections create an open, lively atmosphere. The rooms on the ground floor are intentionally arranged to encourage collaboration: music, art, crafts, and home economics are located close to one another, fostering exchange between the different school programs. Clear layouts provide orientation and allow for flexible use beyond the school day, such as through a practice room that can be accessed separately.

Small homes within the big picture

While the ground floor serves as an open, communal space that fosters interaction, the grade-specific learning areas are located on the upper floors. Here, the spaces are organized into clusters – manageable units that serve as distinct »homes« providing orientation and fostering a sense of identity. Classrooms, specialized learning areas, and communal spaces interlock to create a learning environment that facilitates focused work as well as interaction, quiet study, and collaborative learning.
